Intro
This is the new all-round Severne wave sail, clearly very powerful according to the brand, with a behavior softer than S1 and Blade. Build entirely by different kinds of X-Ply (A bomb-proof laminated Kevlar at foot area, and all leech edge till near the 2nd batten above the boom, five thick threads of the same material over all leech edge, low density X-Ply on the window and above panel, high density X-ply at the top), The Renegade was think to persist all the waves that comes over the sail. The aspect of the sail is impressive, so much for his reinforcements (pieces of rubber sewed to the sail at submitted abrasion zones) and its all first-class accessories: Roller tack pulley placed at 90 degrees from sail, a excellent and light thermo-molded tack fairing, the "elasto strap" to keep the sail rolled, single eyelet at clew, two mini battens to avoid fluttering and head cup at top.
The sleeve is made from only one piece, instead of usually two sewed pieces at middle, that gives its shape.
Rigging
The brand recommends the use with a 430 RDM mast, but doesn't exclude his use with SDM masts... slide the mast inside of sleeve is easy, either for two kinds of masts, but try to pass the boom head rope back to close the boom head, is laborious when we are using a SDM mast, because the narrow wide sleeve, even more if we want to place the boom higher, where the above-boom-batten die: Really is too much easy to rig with s RDM mast.
And for the tension, even tightening to the maximum at tack, although the leech opens well and progressively, the profile is still there, much marked at the bottom of the sail and very forward.
The same happens with the tension of boom: There is no way to flat really the profile.
SAILING
Its reactivity and power to start to planning make the Renegade a clearly on-shore sail, with immediate response to go out of a cursory situation but without neutrality at the time of wanting to reduce propulsion during the surf or maneuvers.
As for the rotation of sail when gibe, it is hard, changing the whole profile in one dry hit. In any case, despite this profile and constant power, the efficacy of the leech does the Renegade feel light and balanced in hands, accelerating and breathing well when gusting. It is, clearly, a good choice for heavy riders or light and gusty winds, but its wind range is upper limited, when the wind begins to become serious.
It is convenient to remember at this time that both, the S1 and Blade, other Severne waves sails comes with the luff preformed that, among other things avoids such hard rotation when gibe.
