Severne NCX ::
windsport, Issue 108, 2006

The Severne NCX stands for No Cam Freeride and is shaped for all-out blasting with speed and comfort in all waters. Ben Severne has put as much if not more analytical work into his sails through a concept called rig ergonomics. It is intended to allow for a more comfortable stance with neutral leg pressure and larger sweet spot through the complete analysis of the sail's overall geometry: centre-of-effort location, rake angles, and pitch and sheetinq angles.

The NCX 6.5 delivers as promised, a moderately large sweet spot giving it added balance while moving back to the footstraps. It rigs up fairly flat and has a stiffness requiring a little more wind to get going: however, once up to speed, it has few rivals. The 6.5 is the most stable sail tested, showing no fear of gusts. It keeps accelerating with more wind while remaining locked in and balanced at all times.

The 6.5 can be tuned up for any size of sailor as downhaul has a great affect on draft placement. Most testers like it best when downhauled a little past spec, so don't be afraid to pull on the strings. It has a beefier construction than last year's model, with an increased usage of X-ply and fewer seams under the bottom batten. For a similar feel in an all-grid construction, try Severne's Gator line.

Bottom Line: An ultra-solid freerider with unlimited top end.
