Severne S2 5.8 ::
Windsurf Magazine, UK - March, 2006

At a Glance
The S2 is classed as Severne's freemove sail, with all four sizes in the series (7.0171 to 5.4m) rigging on a 430cm mast, making it very practical for the recreational sailor. Designed to be as versatile as possible, the line-up benefits from Severne's Homogenous Batten Concept for 2006, intended to ensure similar handling characteristics throughout the sizes by utilizing different batten configurations. Using various grades of x-ply and the latest 'fold-over' seaming in its lower panels, it is a well finished and detailed sail, with a strikingly bold graphic that makes it stand out on the water.

Rigging and Set
There is a moderate amount of pre-shape in the draft of the S2, which remains in place irrespective of the downhaul tension applied. With an excellent tuning ranqe, the two lower battens retain rotation, whilst the sail's power delivery can be tuned effectively on the outhaul setting.

Ride and Handling
With its significant profile, the S2 provides I constant low-down drive whilst off the plane, feeling light and balanced in the hands, before responding positively as the wind increases. Once on the plane the 5.8m has a beautifully small and compact nature, its centre of effort placed well forward in the draft and transferring its energy directly into the board, physically accelerating as it pins the board down with every gust. There is a lot of skin tension present, which combined with the sail's camber makes the leading edge as tight as a drum. As such, the S2 is incredibly stable, giving it masses of range as well as versatility in the stance it can adopt; locked-in it constantly drives forward, remaining composed and dependable even in the most challenging conditions. Alternatively, it offers the rider a 'get out of jail free' card, enabling them to stand up and sheet out, confident that the sail will retain its manners. In addition, the S2's tight nature makes it one of the most lively and reactive sails in the group, which, coupled with its compact outline gives it great manoeuvre potential. Although never going neutral, it remains light and balanced throughout, whilst providing steady low down power to execute the transition confidently.

For: Dependable power, tight reactive handling, wind range.
Against: Lack of neutrality in transition may take some getting used to.

Verdict
A superb compact sail, the S2 combines dependable constant power with light, crisp and easy handling across a massive wind range. It comes well recommended for all rider abilities looking for a versatile all-round sail in this size.
