SEVERNE Blade ::

The Blade is Severne’s power wave sail, being the weapon of choice for World Wave Champion – Scott McKercher. Having tested the 5.3m version in Tenerife last year (see October ’04 issue), we found it to be equally at home in ‘high-wind blasting’ mode, as it was around the wave-break, so we were intrigued to see how the Blade would fair against a more all-round field. Like the S2, the Blade’s build quality is excellent, with considerable reinforcement throughout and plenty of Attention to detail. Metal-X is used extensively in all but the window panel, giving it a very distinctive appearance on the water.

Rigged on the recommended RDM, the 5.7m Blade had masses of pre-shape built into its foil, as it did in its smaller size. Varying the amount of downhaul applied affects the extent of twist in the leech, yet the deep profile in the sail remains; to set the degree of camber required, you play the sail on its outhaul. This style of set is quite unique and does take a little getting used to, but holds distinct advantages. The centre of effort is locked low-down right in the front of the sail, generating considerable power, which is immediately transferred directly into the board. As such the Blade gets the most defiant hull up and on the plane quickly, feeling solid yet composed in the hands once planing. This characteristic handling remains throughout the Blade’s impressive wind range, with more outhaul and downhaul tension efficiently locking the draft in place for overpowered conditions. Whilst it never goes neutral (the camber is always producing drive), the Blade retains its manners at all times, allowing its powerful responsive nature to be put to great use by the aggressive rider. Equally ideal for the heavy or medium weight sailor, the Blade is best suited for straight-line blasting and powerful waveriding, rather than intricate freestyle manoeuvres.

Verdict
Its combination of usable power and responsive handling makes the Blade an ideal choice for the heavier/aggressive rider.
Intermediate: Smooth low-down power delivery, with the durability to last.
Expert: With masses of usable power on tap, it inspires the aggressive to push their limits.
Plug and Play: Will take time to experiment with the set, but has an excellent wind range to exploit.
